The newly amended citizenship act (CAA) has aroused fear among Indian citizens that it will deny citizenship to the existing Muslim minority communities in India. However, if one to dive deep into details of this act then it is clear, that it only aims to provide Indian citizenship to religiously persecuted minorities of our neighboring countries i.e. Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, provided they entered India before December 31, 2014. Since these countries are Islamic state and roughly 95% of their population is Muslim, hence only their minorities had been named in this bill. Looks like, we are heading back into the pre-independence era, only this time we have to fight for our digital rights. While we continue to struggle for net neutrality, here’s a new problem around encrypting our data. Now, the union government has released a draft National Encryption Policy document online seeking methods of data encryption of data and communications used by the government, businesses, and even citizens. So, an ‘expert panel’ from the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY) is set to have prepared the draft.
