Pakistan, USA
New York’s state banking regulator has slapped a $225m fine on Habib Bank, the biggest bank in Pakistan, and ordered it out of the US after finding a catalogue of flaws in compliance that “opened the door” to the financing of terror. The Department of Financial Services on Thursday said it was taking drastic action — the first time it has ordered a bank to shut down in the US — because Habib had failed to correct serious weaknesses first identified more than a decade ago. By 2015, the DFS found, the bank’s compliance function was in an even worse state, lacking the most basic of controls on money-laundering and customer screening. The DFS’ most recent investigation found that Habib facilitated billions of dollars in transactions with a Saudi private bank, the Al Rajhi Bank, which has h...

China cautious India to refrain from pointing fingers at Pakistan at BRICS

China
China has sent out a clear message that it would object to any discussion about Pakistan’s alleged role in sheltering terrorists during the upcoming BRICS summit which will also be attended by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. China is worried that Modi may raise the issue at the meeting because he did so at the Goa summit of BRICS last year, accusing Pakistan of being the ‘mother-ship of terrorism’. “We also noticed that India, when it comes to Pakistan’s counter-terrorism, has some concerns. I don’t think this is an appropriate topic to be discussed at BRICS summit,” Hua Chunying, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson, said at a briefing. She also indicated that raising the issue might affect the success of the summit. “The world is paying great attention to the BRICS summit. I ...

China, National
NEW DELHI: In a diplomatic victory, India and China have agreed to "disengage" from the stand-off in Doklam on Bhutanese territory. After almost 10 weeks of sustained negotiations between top-level Indian and Chinese officials, the MEA on Monday said "expeditious disengagement of border personnel at the face-off site at Doklam has been agreed to and is on-going." By the end of the day, as Indian troops withdrew from their post at Doka La, Chinese troops and their road-building equipment too were removed from the face-off site. The standoff has been on since June 16 when Indian troops physically stopped the PLA from building a road on Doklam plateau. In a second statement at the end of the day, MEA confirmed that both sides had moved out "under verification." The negotiations were cond...

Maldives supports India in standoff with China: ex-president Mohamed Nasheed

Delhi, Maldives
NEW DELHI: Maldives and its people support India in its standoff with China at Doklam as Male values Delhi as a close neighbor, which will render assistance in times of crises, said Mohamed Nasheed, former president and principal Opposition leader of the island nation. “We should take sides and we are taking sides. If I am supporting India in its current crisis, it is in my own interest as neighbour like India supports in times of crises including natural disasters and requirements like supply of water. Maldives and India have lived with each for thousands of years. It is wrong for China to suddenly splash money and ask for support,” Nasheed told ET during his ongoing trip to India amid Chinese efforts to expand strategic outreach in South Asia including warships that would visit Mald...
